Power Electronics
Recommended Semester of Study
1st Level of Study, 2nd Year, Summer Semester
Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire knowledge of the theory and applications of modern power semiconductor devices and methods for converting electrical energy forms and parameters using power electronic converters. They will gain an understanding of the operation of the most important and commonly used power electronic converters, their practical applications, fundamental characteristics, and control methods. Students will learn to analyze voltage and current waveforms in power electronic converters and to calculate their average and RMS values, which are essential skills for sizing power semiconductor devices. They will also learn to calculate electrical power for various waveforms of electrical quantities. During laboratory exercises, students will gain experience in working with modern measuring equipment, assembling electrical circuits according to circuit diagrams, and analyzing their characteristics. They will learn how to prepare laboratory reports, evaluate measured results, and draw appropriate conclusions. The course content is divided into six chapters. The introductory chapter covers modern semiconductor devices and their development. This is followed by the study of basic converter types: rectifiers, AC voltage controllers, inverters, and DC–DC converters. The final chapter focuses on practical applications of converters, including converters for DC and AC drives, power supplies, and renewable energy systems. The course also covers the fundamental control methods used in power electronic converters. As a result, students acquire comprehensive knowledge of converter systems used in industry. The knowledge and skills gained will also support their studies in other specialized courses offered by the department and help them better understand interdisciplinary relationships among technical subjects.
