Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge of the theory and applications of modern semiconductor devices used in electrical engineering. They will become familiar with the operating principles of the most commonly used electronic circuits and configurations, including circuits with discrete bipolar and field-effect transistors, power amplifiers, logic circuits, A/D and D/A converters, operational amplifiers, voltage regulators, and other electronic building blocks. Within laboratory exercises, students will learn how to measure and analyze the characteristics of basic electronic circuits, evaluate the obtained results, and draw appropriate conclusions. The course provides a solid foundation for subsequent specialized courses in electrical engineering and helps students understand the interrelationships between individual technical disciplines.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Review of the physical principles of semiconductors. Semiconductor devices, their basic properties and characteristics.
  2. Applications of bipolar transistors: operating-point stabilization, amplifiers, switches, flip-flops, and signal-shaping circuits.
  3. Field-effect transistors (unipolar transistors): principles of operation, overview of FET types, basic amplifier configurations, transistor equivalent circuits, and applications.
  4. Analog integrated circuits: operational amplifiers, voltage regulators, and optocouplers. Analog electronic circuits: controllers and voltage-generation circuits.
  5. Electronically regulated power supplies. Control of switching devices.
  6. Field-effect transistors in switching mode, Class D amplifiers, power low-pass filters, and pulse-width modulation (PWM).
  7. Digital electronics: Boolean algebra, combinational circuits, and the architecture of microcomputers.
  8. Converters: A/D and D/A converters. Optoelectronic devices.
