Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge of the operating principles of the main components of the traction system of electric and hybrid vehicles, particularly electric motors, power electronic converters, and energy storage systems based on batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells. Special attention is devoted to vehicle battery energy storage systems, their management, and charging systems for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Students will learn how to calculate vehicle driving resistances and energy consumption based on standard driving cycles and verify these calculations using simulation models. During laboratory exercises, they will gain practical experience with in-vehicle communication networks based on CAN and LIN standards. The course also includes measurements of vehicle performance using a MAHA chassis dynamometer. In addition, students will participate in a field trip to a manufacturing facility producing electric or hybrid vehicles.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Vehicle driving resistances, energy consumption during driving, and emissions associated with the energy production and utilization chain (well-to-miles).
  2. Configuration of the traction systems of electric and hybrid vehicles (BEV, HEV, PHEV, mild hybrid, and micro hybrid vehicles).
  3. Traction system components: electric motors and traction converters.
  4. Energy sources for electric and hybrid vehicles: battery technologies, supercapacitors, fuel cells, battery management systems, battery chargers, and energy transfer concepts (vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-grid).
  5. Mathematical modeling of various vehicle traction system configurations. Driving cycle modeling and energy consumption analysis.
  6. Basic communication standards used in the automotive industry, including CAN and LIN. Measurement and analysis of CAN and LIN communication in vehicles and vehicle simulators.
  7. Real-time simulation of vehicle dynamics.
  8. Measurement of vehicle performance using a MAHA chassis dynamometer.
