Electric Drives
Recommended Semester of Study
1st Level of Study, 2nd Year, Summer Semester
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will become familiar with the design, properties, and applications of electric drives. They will acquire knowledge of the mechanics and dynamics of electric drives, as well as of the modeling and sizing of electric drive systems. Students will gain an understanding of the control methods used for DC and AC electric drives. They will also be able to develop mathematical models of selected types of electric motors using MATLAB.
Brief Course Outline
- Basic concepts of electric drive theory, requirements for and classification of electric drives.
- Contact and contactless control systems.
- Mechanics of electric drives and interaction between the motor and the driven machine.
- Transient phenomena in electric drives.
- Sizing of electric drives.
- DC drives: classification, characteristics, control methods, and braking techniques.
- Modeling of DC drives.
- AC drives: induction and synchronous drives, classification, characteristics, control methods, and braking techniques.
