Learning Outcomes

The course builds upon the Digital Signal Controllers course and focuses on practical applications of microcontrollers in embedded systems. In this course, students will learn how to use a signal microcontroller to process signals from various types of sensors, communicate with external devices, and design and implement field-oriented control (FOC) of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Through practical laboratory exercises, students will improve their algorithmic thinking and C programming skills, learn to interpret electrical circuit diagrams, and develop the ability to integrate knowledge from power electronics and semiconductor converters, controlled drives, control theory, programming, and algorithm design. As part of a practical team assignment, students will work on a project for a fictitious industrial customer, where they will develop firmware for existing hardware. During the project, students will learn the fundamentals of project management, including defining intermediate objectives, creating project schedules, assigning tasks, and monitoring adherence to the project plan. Through this assignment, students will also enhance their soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, and presentation skills.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Review of programming and algorithm design concepts – working with structures and pointers, programming conventions and standards, software code documentation and its automatic generation using DOXYGEN, and working with GIT.
  2. Output voltage generation – sinusoidal modulation, third-harmonic injection modulation, space vector modulation (SVM), and implementation of modulation techniques using a microcontroller.
  3. Discretization and its software implementation – discrete filters, discrete integrators, discrete PI controllers, and their software representation.
  4. Basic architecture of a control program for field-oriented control (FOC) of a permanent magnet synchronous motor – mathematical model of the motor, control structure, controller design, integration of control components into firmware, and practical controller tuning.
  5. SPI, I2C, and SCI communication peripherals – operating principles, application examples, comparison, advantages, and disadvantages.
  6. Display devices – seven-segment displays, matrix displays, alphanumeric displays, and the principles of their control.
  7. Communication standards RS232, RS422, and RS485 – operating principles, application examples, comparison, advantages, and disadvantages.
  8. Position sensors with communication protocols – sensors using SSI, BiSS-C, EnDat, and HIPERFACE interfaces, and their integration with microcontrollers using communication peripherals.
